My colleague Mike Sando has a stat he likes to trot out about the Saints and defense. In their first 11 seasons with Drew Brees as their quarterback (2006-16), the Saints have had five seasons in which they allowed fewer than 24 points per game. They were 58-22 with a Super Bowl victory in those seasons. In the other six — seasons in which they allowed at least 24 points per game — they went 43-53. The Cardinals’ rushing attack had been among the worst in the league prior to Week 6, as Arizona ranked tied for 25th in my good blocking rate (GBR) metric from Weeks 1-5 with a 36.1 percent total in that category. Their ball carriers didn’t even fare well when given quality run blocking, as the Cardinals’ 5.3-yard mark in my good blocking yards per attempt (GBYPA) metric made them the only team with a GBYPA of less than 6 yards.

That didn’t look to change against a Tampa Bay rushing defense that placed first in GBR allowed in Weeks 1-5 (31.3 percent), but the addition of a power back like Peterson seemed to motivate the Arizona blockers to the point where they posted a 53.1 percent GBR in this matchup. Peterson racked up a 9.1 GBYPA total that was nearly 4 yards higher than what Arizona had posted as a team prior to this game.

The Cardinals’ ability to dominate a stout defensive front seven bodes well for Peterson’s fantasy managers, as Arizona’s next three foes (Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks) are far from powerhouses in the advanced defensive rushing metrics categories. That points toward Peterson’s dominant performance as potentially being par for the course for him in the near future.

The New York Giants lost another wide receiver for the year with Brandon Marshall set to undergo surgery Tuesday to repair an ankle injury suffered in Week 5.

Marshall, 33, announced the surgery Monday night on Instagram.

The play of Cameron Jordan. Jordan has always been seen as the brightest bulb in an especially dim Saints defense, but he has looked like a Defensive Player of the Year candidate over the past three games. In his past 12 quarters, Jordan has four sacks, five quarterback knockdowns, three passes defensed, a forced fumble, a pass breakup which led to an interception, and a pick-six. He produced one of the most physically dominant plays you’ll see all season last Sunday, when he bull-rushed reserve Lions tackle Brian Mihalik backward into Matthew Stafford, sacking the Lions quarterback without Jordan ever laying a hand on the former first overall pick.

Kaepernick’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, issued a statement clarifying the invitation.

The first interception was taken by Telvin Smith off a deflection from the line of scrimmage and taken 28 yards for a touchdown. On the next drive, Jalen Ramsey deflected a pass into the arms of Barry Church who took it 51 yards for another touchdown that gave the Jaguars a 20-9 lead.

The national anthem became a talking point in the NFL last season after Kaepernick started sitting for in protest of the police brutality and inequalities that people of color in America still face today. Kaepernick switched from sitting to a kneel, and other players followed his example.

How Embiid’s new deal could work, plus Philly’s other options

Editor’s note: Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers agreed to a $148 million extension on Monday that includes incentives — such as millions of more dollars for making the All-NBA team — and protection against injury, with specific details on those clauses still unreported. This piece has been updated to reflect the news.

The evidence against Embiid receiving a lucrative extension from the 76ers was overwhelming: two seasons (164 games) missed due to a recurring right foot issue and a third season cut prematurely with a left knee injury that eventually resulted in a March surgery. Embiid also did not play in a back-to-back last season as the Sixers monitored his minutes. Until recently, Embiid had not been cleared to participate in 5-on-5 in practice and still has not played in a preseason game.

When the Boston Celtics convened to watch film of the games two days later, coach Brad Stevens made sure to spotlight the sequence.

While it was Latavius Murray that handled early work for the Vikings backfield, McKinnon emerged in Week 5 as RB3, toting the rock 16 times for 95 yards and a touchdown while also adding six catches for 51 yards. McKinnon is a superb athlete that played two thirds of the Vikings’ snaps on Monday night of Week 5. While we forecasted that Murray had a chance to seize the starting role following Dalvin Cook’s season-ending injury, it sure looks like McKinnon gives Minnesota its best option going forward. Williams was the seventh overall pick in the draft for a reason — he’s an immense physical talent.
